Everyday Carry For 2025

For my everyday carry in 2025, I strive to keep my gear lightweight and streamline my essentials for photography. Gone are the days of lugging around an enormous rucksack filled with heavy equipment, like the Canon 5D Mark III with a battery grip and an array of lenses that would leave my back aching by day's end. I'm focused on efficiency, carrying what I genuinely need for photography and my YouTube video projects.

I transitioned to a sling bag in 2019 and recently upgraded to version 2. This bag is one of the finest photography bags I've ever owned, perfectly accommodating my primary camera and video gear. I've organized it to fit my workflow for 2025 and beyond, ensuring it effectively meets my needs. While I acknowledge that circumstances may shift as the year progresses, this setup feels ideal for my photographic endeavours.

I used the first version of the bag for several years until 2024 when the zipper on the main compartment became unusable. This unexpected issue was frustrating, especially as I prepared for a YouTube video. I quickly visited the camera shop and purchased version 2 of their available bag. It’s the ideal size for my daily travels, easily accommodating all my photography and videography gear. The bag's weather resistance gives me peace of mind during rainy outings; I can focus on capturing moments without worrying about my equipment.

With this bag, I enjoy unparalleled freedom of movement. I can effortlessly rotate it to access my essentials without taking it off. Everything on my list fits comfortably inside, though I don’t carry all items at once—only what I require for the day. Typically, I bring just one lens attached to my camera, but I will switch to a different lens for portrait shoots. Similarly, I’ll take the Flash only for nighttime photography or during events like London Fashion Week. Overall, this bag has become invaluable for my everyday needs.

Cameras & Lens

Leica M11

Leica UK: https://shorturl.at/WuIfi

This is undoubtedly the best camera I have ever owned. Over the years, I've experimented with various camera systems, but when I discovered the Leica M11 on MPB.com in April 2024 for an incredibly low price, I couldn’t resist. Despite being listed in good condition, I was initially sceptical, given that a new Leica M11 retails for £8,000. I decided to trade in my Leica Q2, an exceptional camera, and my Leica SL2-S, which I had hoped to use for video work. Since I already had an M-mount lens compatible with the Leica M system, acquiring the Leica M11 was an obvious choice.

After a few months of using it, I can confidently say it was worth the investment. The camera features a remarkable 60-megapixel sensor with 64 GB of internal storage. I appreciate the convenience of charging the battery directly in the camera, a feature lacking in my previous models, which required an adapter. The Leica M11's battery comfortably lasts a full day of shooting.

Although I'm not particularly technical with cameras, I understand the essentials, and I find the Leica M11 the ideal choice for my passion for street photography. It has also performed admirably for landscapes and portraits. I envision this camera being my go-to for several years until the time is right for an upgrade.

Voigtlander 28mm F/2 Ultron VM Type II

Robert White: https://shorturl.at/oKES7

The 28mm focal length has been my go-to for street photography for six to seven years. This journey began in 2019 when I acquired the Ricoh GRII, a camera renowned for its 28mm capabilities. Instantly captivated by this focal length's potential, I discovered it was perfect for achieving that iconic New York street-style shot. Unsurprisingly, many street photography legends favour the 28mm lens; it allows you to immerse yourself in your surroundings while effortlessly capturing your subjects.

Utilizing a zone-focusing system enables me to achieve precise focus without relying on autofocus. The 28mm depth of field is remarkable for isolating the subject, although it requires getting up close and personal with them. The Voigtlander lens I use exemplifies exceptional build quality and image rendering. Its close-focus capability of 0.5 meters surpasses typical rangefinder limitations, as Leica M systems typically focus from 0.7 meters. Fortunately, the Live View mode offers a reliable solution for achieving accurate close focus.

I cherish this lens and believe investing in Leica glass is unnecessary without seeking absolute perfection. It performs exceptionally well for me, comprising about 80% of my usage on the Leica M11. My only reservation is its lack of weather sealing, which prevents me from using it in rainy conditions, unlike the weather-resistant Leica M11. Nevertheless, my affinity for the 28mm focal length remains unwavering.

Voigtlander 35mm F/2 Ultron VM Type II

Robert White: https://shorturl.at/cC0yp

This is a new lens I recently acquired. It closely resembles the 28mm lens I already own, but I chose this one for its compact size; it produces beautifully rendered images and pairs well with the 28mm Voigtlander lens. I envisioned using this lens for street photography during quieter times when the city isn't bustling with activity. It allows for more excellent compression of the subjects against the background, creating a striking effect, particularly in my hometown during the weekdays when the city centre remains less crowded. This lens is perfect for highlighting the subjects without showing much background.

In contrast, I prefer the 28mm lens on busy days, such as summer Saturdays in my hometown or at significant events where crowds are plentiful. While I maintain the same zone focusing distances with both lenses, the depth of field differs. The 35mm lens offers superior background-to-subject separation. However, the trade-off is that achieving precise focus on the subjects can be more challenging.

Beyond street photography, this lens will serve as an excellent alternative for model shoots, where I find the 35mm more advantageous than the 28mm. Although I have no objections to using the 28mm for portraits, I believe the 35mm lens excels in that domain. Along with my 50mm Voigtlander APO f2 lens, the 35mm will be my go-to choice for photoshoots. Having previously shot with a 35mm before discovering the versatility of the 28mm focal length, I anticipate regularly alternating between these two lenses for my street photography.

Filter & Flash

Tiffen Black Pro Mist Filter 1/4

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3PuVIjx

This lens filter has become an integral part of my photography toolkit. Each lens is adorned with a Black Pro Mist Filter, tailored to various strengths, though the Tiffen Black Pro Mist Filter 1/4 is my go-to choice. I’ve paired it with my 28mm and 35mm Voigtlander lenses, and ever since I adopted this filter two years ago, I have not looked back.

The Black Pro Mist Filter infuses a soft glow into the highlights, beautifully preserving contrast in the shadows. This effect truly shines at night, transforming ordinary lights into a mesmerizing, ethereal glow reminiscent of vintage lenses from the 1950s. It evokes a classic aesthetic akin to timeless photographs that pay homage to legends of the past.

In a world where modern lenses often create images that appear overly sharp and processed, this filter harmoniously blends the clarity of contemporary optics with a dreamlike quality. Initially favoured in videography, I find my reliance on this filter extends into photography, and its enchanting allure ensures it will remain attached to my lenses for the foreseeable future.

The availability of different strengths adds a unique touch, allowing personal customization to achieve the desired ambience. One drawback is the filter effect's baked-in quality in the final image. At the same time, adjustments can be made in Lightroom or similar software. The inherent uniqueness of a built-in filter is irreplaceable.

Moreover, this filter works wonders in portrait photography by naturally softening skin tones, minimizing the need for extensive retouching. Tiffen's Black Pro Mist Filters stand out not just for their price but also for their superior quality. Although many brands now offer similar effects, nothing quite matches the nuances provided by Tiffen.

LightPix Labs FlashQ Q20II

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3WfEydm

I have used the LightPix Lab Flash Q Q20II for nearly five years. While I don’t always carry it, it’s an essential tool that shines when the timing is right. This compact Flash is ideal for night photography, allowing me to zone focus effectively. It is compatible with any camera system but works particularly well with the Leica M11.

Its portability is a significant advantage; it easily fits in my pocket or bag. However, it doesn’t feature TTL like a manual flash, meaning I have to control the flash power manually, offering a hands-on photography approach. A standout feature is its off-camera capability, enabled by a wireless trigger that allows me to detach the Flash, providing greater creative freedom to position the light.

The Flash operates on AA batteries, and I prefer using Eneloop Pro rechargeable batteries, which are convenient to charge with a micro USB cable. The wireless trigger also charges via the same cable. However, I would have appreciated a USB-C option for faster charging.

There are a couple of drawbacks to consider. At times, the Flash can misfire, leading to missed shots and requiring some fiddling to get it back on track—a common issue for this model. Additionally, Flash has 35mm coverage compared to 24mm in many other systems. Using a 28mm lens can result in uneven illumination, particularly on the top and bottom of the frame, which can be noticeable but manageable.

I typically use this Flash for events, nighttime photography, and occasions like London Fashion Week, when lighting conditions can be challenging. Though I rarely incorporate Flash into my work, having it on hand proves invaluable.

Film Camera & Film Stock

Olympus XA Rangefinder + A11 Flash

Search eBay or look at film camera websites or shops.

I hadn't intended to acquire the Olympus XA camera with the A11 Flash. I discovered this camera at the Wales & West Photography Show in June 2024, where it caught my attention with its excellent price and pristine condition. While I would have loved to purchase the Leica M6, this compact rangefinder from the 1970s is an exceptional choice. It operates on an aperture priority basis, allowing me to adjust almost everything else, even though the shutter speed remains fixed. The manual focus setup features a distance scale in meters, making it user-friendly.

Although the camera resembles a disposable camera, it offers superior features and build quality. Its sensitive shutter button can be easily activated unintentionally, yet its quiet operation makes it perfect for street photography. A discreet leaf shutter system complements the camera. Although it requires batteries, it's mainly for the light meter, which determines the appropriate shutter speed.

One drawback is the dim rangefinder patch, which complicates focusing. However, there's a simple workaround: applying a piece of black tape or using sharper in the centre of the patch enhances contrast and clarity when aligning the focus. I've implemented the black tape method on my camera, which has noticeably improved visibility.

I typically don’t carry this camera in my bag unless I’m without a coat; it's convenient enough to take anywhere. Overall, it's an outstanding companion for street photography.

Ilford HP5+ 400

Ilford Photo: https://shorturl.at/ytzSV

I strongly prefer black-and-white film over colour film due to its versatility and unique aesthetic qualities. The black-and-white film has a significantly greater exposure latitude, allowing for greater creative freedom. As long as I avoid underexposure, the possibilities are endless.

Ilford HP5+ 400 holds a special place in my heart, primarily because it is manufactured in England and is typically more affordable than the Kodak Tri-X 400 in the UK. Supporting local businesses is essential, although I have no reservations about using Kodak when the circumstances call for it. When travelling abroad, I might find Kodak more cost-effective than Ilford, and I would certainly consider that.

What I appreciate most about Ilford HP5+ 400 is its remarkable rendering capabilities. The film responds beautifully as I often push it by +2 stops and achieve outstanding results. By setting my camera to ISO 800 and developing the film at +2 for a final effective ISO of 1600, I can ensure I’m overexposing by +1 stop, which gives me the confidence to capture images while still having room to recover in post-processing. This approach contrasts with digital photography, where underexposure is typically preferred.

Whether I'm capturing the vibrancy of street life, the serenity of landscapes, or the intricacies of portraits, Ilford HP5+ 400 is my film of choice. Its reliability and outstanding performance make it an essential tool in my photography repertoire. With Ilford HP5+ 400, you can't go wrong.

YouTube Cameras & Accessories

DJI Pocket 3

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4alXAEQ

The DJI Pocket 3 is one of the finest video cameras released recently. It features a high-quality lens paired with impressive gimbal stabilization, ensuring smooth and steady footage regardless of the environment. Its performance in low-light conditions is exceptional, allowing for stunning shots even when lighting is scarce. Additionally, I can effortlessly color-grade the footage captured by this camera, enhancing its visual appeal.

In my early days on YouTube, I relied solely on a smartphone—specifically, a Samsung S8. While it served its purpose, nighttime shooting left much to be desired, and the audio quality was relatively poor. My journey then took me to explore compact cameras equipped for video, eventually leading to a period where I relied exclusively on action cameras. However, it wasn't until I discovered the DJI Pocket 3 that I experienced a remarkable leap in video quality. I only wish this incredible device had been available years ago.

With the ability to utilize accessories like filters and wireless microphones, the DJI Pocket 3 has become my primary tool for YouTube content. Its lightweight design lets me easily slip it into my bag or pocket, making it incredibly convenient for on-the-go filming. Now, I can capture videos at any moment without the burden of heavy equipment. This will remain a key part of my kit for the foreseeable future. While an upgrade may be on the horizon, I genuinely believe this camera is the most fulfilling tool for video production I have ever enjoyed.

DJI Action 4

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3E1DbIN

The DJI Action 4 will be my primary camera for my YouTube videos' Point of View (POV) segments. Over the past few years, I’ve focused heavily on creating POV content, but I’m now shifting back to a vlogging style I used during my photoshoot outings. The DJI Action 4 delivers outstanding high-quality footage and impressive digital stabilization. It integrates seamlessly with the DJI Pocket 3, allowing me to switch effortlessly between the two.

Having utilized several action cameras throughout my journey, my first was the GoPro 4 Silver, which, while not the best on the market, effectively captured behind-the-scenes moments of my shoots. Action cameras have been integral to my filmmaking evolution on YouTube. However, I struggled with the preceding model from DJI Action 3, which suffered from severe focus issues. This led me to consider reverting to GoPro. That was until the release of the DJI Action 4; I had sent the Action 3 back to Amazon for repairs, ultimately receiving a refund that I quickly reinvested in the DJI Action 4.

The DJI Action 4's battery life is remarkable, allowing me to record for hours without changing batteries. However, I always carry a spare, just in case. I highly recommend acquiring an action camera for YouTube; their compact size and superior performance make them invaluable. My YouTube videos would not reach their full potential without it, especially as a street photographer.

DJI Mic 2

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/4fYL13g

I want to elevate my audio quality with a microphone to enhance my YouTube videos. I recognize that the DJI Mic 2 transmitter is available with the creative combo for the DJI Pocket 3. However, I opted to purchase this separately, as I didn't acquire the complete combo. I currently own the original DJI Mic system, which includes the receiver and two transmitters, that I utilize for my interview-style podcast videos.

The DJI Mic 2 offers the advantage of wireless connectivity through its built-in Bluetooth, unlike the previous version that required a receiver connection to the camera. It can connect wirelessly to my video cameras, the DJI Pocket 3 and the DJI Action 4. This feature lets me focus on my dialogue, minimizing distracting background noise. Additionally, the capability to record safety tracks directly into the microphone gives me the flexibility to enhance the audio quality of my content.

Audio is a fundamental element of filmmaking; without clear sound, the visual aspect loses its impact. Therefore, having a single receiver ideally suits my on-the-go video production needs. I can always rely on the previous generation system when I require a more controlled sound environment. I only recently acquired this equipment, and I look forward to seeing its positive impact on my YouTube videos over the next year.

TELESIN SE Neck Mount for DJI Osmo Action

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3WalyN9

The Telesin SE Neck Mount is undeniably one of the finest accessories for action cameras I have ever owned for filming my POV YouTube videos. Throughout the years, I have tried various accessories to achieve this style, and none have matched the performance of the Telesin SE Neck Mount. I particularly appreciate its convenience; I can easily detach it, roll it up, and stow it in my bag.

Previously, I used a chest mount that was cumbersome and difficult to pack if I was trying to travel light, which made the experience less enjoyable. I've also experimented with clip-on options, but those proved impractical when I needed to access my bag. In contrast, this neck mount allows me to capture POV-style videos seamlessly without any hassle.

One of the standout features of this neck mount is how easily I can put it on and take it off. Having had it for over a year, it has become one of my most essential tools for capturing engaging POV content. This accessory is a must-have in my bag, ensuring I'm always ready to create compelling POV videos for my YouTube channel whenever inspiration strikes.

K&F Concept Black Diffusion 1/4 Filter for DJI Osmo Action 4

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3WiKUJ4

This is an exciting new addition to my gear. I've been looking for a suitable filter for the DJI Action camera for quite some time, and I was thrilled to discover that it has finally been released. K&F Concept offers a range of filters designed specifically for DJI Action cameras. As soon as I spotted this online, I knew I had to make the purchase. I wanted a filter that would complement the ones I use with my photography lenses. Having used several K&F Concept filters in the past, I've always found them to be impressive. While it may not be the absolute top-of-the-line, it meets my expectations beautifully. Though I haven’t had the chance to test it yet, you can expect to see it featured in my upcoming YouTube videos. If I could not source a Black Pro Mist filter for the DJI Action 4, I would have resorted to using a plug-in in my video editing software, which I prefer to avoid. I strive to keep my editing process straightforward and my videos clean and uncomplicated.

K&F Concept Black Mist Filter for DJI Osmo Pocket 3

Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/3PAoRK5

I recognized that the DJI Pocket 3 included its Black Pro Mist Filter in the creative bundles. However, I chose the K&F Concept Black Pro Mist Filters because they are slimmer and allow the DJI Pocket 3 to power down while still attached. The effect of this filter is exceptional, seamlessly aligning with my videography and photography style. Consistency is crucial in my creative processes. Additionally, I acquired a circular polarizer and a variable ND filter to use alongside the Black Pro Mist Filter. While I have the option to stack them, I prefer to keep the Black Pro Mist Filter on the DJI Pocket 3 at all times. This choice is especially beneficial for my commercial projects, helping to elevate the promotional content I create for local businesses on social media. The Black Pro Mist Filters have become indispensable in my creative toolkit, and I don't foresee a time without one in my setup.
